NSW Education Minister listens to parents |
|
Our most recent meeting with our NSW Education Minister, Ms Verity Firth, began by parents thanking her for the retraction of the student travel subsidy which, she agreed, had been of great interest and concern to a large number of people. It would have affected so many families, particularly rural students who travel great distances to attend school. Thank you to schools and parents who offered their views on this matter. The success of the retraction was a direct result of parents ensuring their voices were heard by the government.
Other topics covered in discussion with Ms Firth:
1. HSC Special Provisions
2. Students with disabilities, which is apparently the fasting growing area of funding for the NSW Government.
3. Role of the NSW Government in the Federal Government’s Education Revolution
4. Safe public transport options
5. Teaching of phonics and grammar
6. Non government schools having to pay for VET(TAFE) fees unlike their state school counterparts.
7. Work Experience insurance
8. Community partnerships for boarding schools

The Council was pleased that included in the meeting was the Education Minister’s Special Education advisor, indicating a desire to improve the situation for children with special needs. However, there is much work still to be done in the Special needs/Students with Disabilities area and we are continuing to pursue the decision makers.
The NSW Disabilities Minister, Mr Paul Lynch, met recently with parent representatives of the Council to discuss special needs in education and the areas common to both education and disabilities. The Council wants to harness their experience and expertise in working with disadvantaged students whether Rural, Indigenous or with special needs. The Minister was very receptive to the proposal of their department and the Department of Education approaching the issue of supporting children in need collaboratively. |

New Federal infrastructure money flows to schools |
|
$14.7 billion, over 3 years, of federal government money is to flow into all sectors of education under the ‘Building the Education Revolution’ package. The funding appears to contain 3 elements-
· Primary Schools ($12.4 billion) for large scale infrastructure
· High Schools ($1billion) for science and language facilities
· ALL schools ($1.3billion) to provide up to $200,000 to every school for maintenance and renewal and minor building works
As parents we welcome this new federal injection into education. We believe it should come more regularly and be budgeted for on an annual basis. The program has been earmarked as a jobs creation program during tough economic times. However with the poor state of so many schools in
Australia due to previous lack of funding from all levels of government it has been welcomed by all sectors of education. |
