NSW Government Cuts Education Subsidies in Mini Budget |
In its 2008 mini budget the NSW State Government announced the following changes to the education porfolio.
-
The $50 back-to-school payment for families has been scrapped, estimated to save about $60m a year. The Government plans to spend $20m of that on schools in disadvantaged areas and providing special needs education.
-
The Government will reform the $470 million school student travel scheme, with the introduction of an annual co-payment of $45 for primary school students and $90 for high school students. There'll be a cost cap of $180 per family with hardship provisions included.
-
A four-year capital works program outlined in this year's budget has been re-prioritised but the outlay remains largely unchanged, with $56.8 billion worth of infrastructure projects to be built, including 19 new school projects and 12 new TAFE projects ($246 million).
-
$150m will be used for school maintenance and minor capital works programs. To read a full speech transcript of the NSW Government's mini budget. Go to www.treasury.nsw.gov.au and follow the main link to the 2008-09 Mini-Budget.

NSW Government to cut student travel subsidy |
|
Media reports have stated that the NSW Treasurer is to cut school children's transport subsidies in the upcoming budget annoucements. The Parents Council has written to the Premier of NSW asking for immediate consultation with parents, further details on the proposed cuts and a statement of our objection to the funding cuts. A similar letter has also been sent from the Association of Independent schools Consultative Committee of which the Parents Council are a part of.
The Parents Council has had representation on the SSTS Appeals Committee for a considerable amount of time, representing all school children. This has allowed us to see at first hand the issues surrounding parents in the current economic environment and therefore to see why many tax-paying parents from all backgrounds, who contribute to their children’s education in after tax dollars, would be dramatically affected by cuts to the scheme no matter what education system they choose.
We understand that student transportation costs are part of the education budget rather than the transport budget. With this in mind it appears there will be a direct funding cut to education. This is an unacceptable situation given the importance of education and contrary to the view of the Federal Government.
