The Easy Guide to Socialising Online

May 26, 2015 News

The Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard, recently launched a new online cybersafety resource – The Easy Guide to Socialising Online. The Easy Guide to Socialising Online provides cybersafety information for 26 social networking sites, search engines and online games, and gives step by step instructions on how to report cyberbullying, abuse and inappropriate content on these sites.

It also provides clear information for parents, educators and young people on how to adjust privacy settings on these sites as well as tips on how to stay safe when using any social media site.

Well respected child and adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Greg said this government initiative was the “Rolls Royce” of guides to combat cyberbullying.

The Easy Guide was developed following advice from the Youth Advisory Group on Cybersafety (YAG) – a group of young Australians who provide advice to government on cybersafety issues from a young person’s perspective.

Members of the YAG told us that young people wanted to know more about how to socialise online safely – and their parents wanted more information about the social media sites that young people use.

Members of the Government’s Consultative Working Group on Cybersafety (CWG), including the Internet Industry Association, worked closely with the government to develop the Easy Guide.

Advice on social media sites was provided directly by CWG members – including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, NineMSN, Yahoo!7 and the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association – as well as other social media organisations.

The Easy Guide is available at Click here and via the Cybersafety Help Button.

Promotional materials including posters, factsheets and bookmarks are available for schools and families. If you would like free copies of any of the above, please email
